Postcards

Once upon a time many shops, tea rooms, etc. in Lakeland sold postcards. Mostly these were the standard views of fells and lakes usually photographed in bright sunshine with smiling "tourists" on the summits or ascending the heights.

On the same stands as these cards were scenes of Lakeland foxhunting, also sold as postcards.

Fashion changes and the hunting cards were phased out for whatever reason. A sense of reality overtook the postcard industry and the cards showed the Lakeland as it really is, the faces of "tourists" reflecting more accurately the struggle of getting to the summits and pictures taken in bad weather appeared. But the "hunting cards" were gone.
